August 29, 2007

Kaitlin & Breana had spent the summer as typical growing kids, they went to bed late and woke up when their bodies wanted to. I usually spend a week or two before school starts getting them acclimated to the wee morning hours, but not this summer. This time that week was spent in Tahoe w/ their Grandparents and cousins (post will come soon). While I'm sure they didn't stay up to an ungodly hour, I'm sure they slept in.

The first day of school this year was monumental for us. Not only because the girls got out of bed before Dan & I did but because both girls were going into Middle School. Goodness, how did that happen?! I've come to accept my new role as a Parent of Middle Schoolers. I no longer was struggling with the fact that Breana, our baby, will be in this 'huge' school (compared to the 6 classroom school they spent 6-7 years at, everything is huge!) and no longer was crying over the image of them walking through the crowded halls or organizing their backpacks between classes at their lockers without me {pathetic, huh?} I do recognize that the two were eager for change and excited about the new possibilities ahead of them. They definitely were ready to move forward.

And what a place for them to spend the next 2-3 years at, my alma mater!

Teresa, Tisha, even Tom, & I walked through and around these doors many moons ago. In Kaitlin's Science class I sat there w/ Mrs. Prince and her many fermaldahyde jars. In Breana's Core class I toke the Preamble test in w/ Mr. Patterson ("We the people, in order to form a more perfect union..." you know the 'Schoolhouse Rock' song - you know you do!) My 8th grade locker w/ combination 30-10-40 (not kidding you) no longer exists - the whole row completely gone but I can still point out my 7th grade locker.
While the track & field has since been ungraded to the new artifical turf and the mascot has changed from the Matadors to the Mavericks, the time that I spent within those walls are so vivid to me. I had a great time in Junior High - nothing but good times, lots of learning, lots of incredible experiences and wonderful teachers. I hope the same for my girls.

Since the first day of school, the girls & I have been experimenting with different drop-off locations and pick-up tactics. We almost have it figured out. The drive in the morning was becoming so stressful for me. I was no longer enjoying our time in the car together - I had to worry about traffic & the lack of thought drivers had in the morning and had to be mindful of pedestrians. The drive the last 6-7 years up the simple country road provided us with serenity and time for meaningful conversations. I wanted that back. One morning I couldn't remember a thing Kaitlin & Breana were talking about - something about a harmonica and a game w/ dots & numbers. Once I arrived at my doorstep I knew things had to change. We decided that leaving 5 minutes earlier and dropping off at a different location would allow us to have that peace of mind back...and so far, it has.

In order for our household to run smoother in the morning, the girls have to get organized the night before. Right before bed, time is spent on pulling their backpacks and their outfits together.
Once they're off, I spend the morning picking up here & there and clearing the kitchen counter. One morning Breana apparantly changed her mind on her outfit once she saw the clear sky out the window.
Right where she changed, the evidence stayed.

New Toy

On one of our bike rides this summer in Sonoma, Dan & I spent some time in my favorite store on the square. Rows & rows upon shelves & shelves of the best kitchenware/cookware. Some you can definitely live without despite the fact that they are pure eye candy - beautiful enough to leave laying on the counter - others are down right necessities.
This 'palm peeler' was a definite "gotta have!" Also a gadget we found sooo cute it'll lure the kids into the kitchen :D The first day I didn't call attention to myself while I was peeling carrots & potatoes to throw in the crock-pot. I wanted this new toy to myself. No sharing. No questions.
I started in the morning while the girls were at school.
Today was a crock-pot kind of day. It was one of those days where from the moment the girls jump in the vanagon we move from one point to another until we finally are able to rest our feet at home well past a decent dinner making time. Coming home with the aroma of dinner in the air is just heaven to me - especially the smell of a dinner that takes an hour to roast in the oven.

The palm peeler definitely has a different feel to it. You make better contact and it seems to only less passings to complete the peeling. I liked it. The next time I used it the color caught the girls' attention and soon I had the two of them around the potatoes. I think we need to buy 1 more!

Now I have to go back to 'Sign of the Bear' for that egg poacher!

A different kind of rhythmn

I have a thing for old typewriters. The *snap*snap*snap*ding*swoosh* rhythmn. The *click*pause*click*pause*click* of the keys at a slower pace so the keys don't stack up rhythmn. The special lining up you have to do if you make a mistake (after you've blown the liquid paper dry) which always leads to the keys being off-line and off to the side rhythmn.
I love the way the keys are set in a high tier. I love how you can alternate from the black ribbon to the red ribbon by a little switch.
Quite a few years ago my sister, Tisha, found a store not to far from where we lived that repaired typewriters and sold them as well. I drove by there the other day and saw that he now repairs cash registers.
From to time to time K&B bring out the typewriter from its boxy metal case. This particular time Breana brought it out to type out a story - with the good old fashion typewriter and red pen.

September Dining

This particular evening, Kaitlin worked her magic in the kitchen preparing another specialty of hers - pesto!
Sometimes she likes to add more garlic than the recipe calls for. Her most favorite ingredient is freshly grated parmesan. For this particular pesto dinner we only had finely grated parmesan in the refrigerator. While we all appreciate the flavor of freshly grated parmesan, this pesto didn't fail to tickle the tummy. Her pesto is incredibly delicious! What does a Mother do while her daughter is preparing dinner?

Summer Fun - "The Search for Hidden Treasure"

One of the fun & incredibly special things Kaitlin & Breana do every summer is participate in Vacation Bible Camp. Never you mind their Uncle runs the day camp...well, that's one of the reasons they love this VBC. Tom's energy with children and for teaching the word of God is infectious. When being introduced to an acquaintances' son one summer I told him my brother-in-law was one of the Leaders. He asked, "Which Leader?" I thought of how I can describe Tom to this 6 yr old, "The one who was jumping up & down at the morning assembly." His eyes grew as big as the smile on his face, "Oh him!!!" This year Kaitlin, Breana, Kylie & Brayton were no longer campers, they were Leaders-In-Training (Lights & LITs).

Breana was a 'Light' for Kindergarten & 1st graders w/ Brayton. She had the unfortunate (yeah right) job of being surrounded by such cuteness & cuddleness. By the look on her face you can't help but feel bad for her ;) winkwink

She'd come home w/ stories of stickers, naps & little voices.
Kaitlin & Kylie were LITs for 2nd graders. Kaitlin was touched by the kindness of these 7 year olds. The kids (affectionally known as "the K's & the B's") had long days at VBC - they got up early every morning to help set-up and stayed after the campers left each day to clean-up. It was hot and their days were busy but each day when I picked them up the 4 were full of energy and thankfulness. This "job" of theirs was fun - assisting in teaching these young ones about Jesus was rewarding for them. The time & energy that Tom & Tisha put into this VBC is admirable. I know if you asked them, like the K's & the B's, what they get back from the group of kids is what keeps them going. At the end of the week when Tom's voice is gone & Tisha is ready to hibernate for the weekend to replenish, I know they're planning and looking forward to next summer.
I asked Kaitlin & Breana what they learned from that week at VBC and both answered, "You shouldn't be consumed with what treasures you have on earth, it's your heavenly treasure that you should cherish."

Not a bad week...

Tiburon/Mill Valley Kick-Off Soccer Tournament

We were able to stay up in Sonoma during the soccer tournament this summer. Fortunately our friends from the team were able to stay with us. Saturday morning I took a walk around the property to pick apples - sweet delicious apples. Everything and everybody was still asleep. The air was crisp, the sun very promising and the leaves were still. I tried to be as quiet as the morning but the dry grass crunched beneath my feet and, I swear, echoed across the vineyard. The night before while the girls took their friends exploring, we enjoyed a bottle - or two of Sonoma's goodness. It's nice to have an evening to unwind and talk about our lives outside of soccer, although that's what brought us together 4 years ago.Jacob & Buena Vista never fail me. Maybe it's that familiarity that makes it all so comfortable - much like that scent or taste that brings you back to that safe place in your childhood - or maybe it's just good wine. Right now it has secured this weekend in my memory bank.
Kaitlin & Breana had an awesome weekend. This tournament was the first set of games for this team to play together. They came out strong and held their own against tough teams. It was quite exciting when we realized that they had secured a spot in the Consolation Round!

Winning 4th place was a great way to start their season!

Summer games

The girls & I enjoy playing 'Quiddler'. We sit on the floor at the low table and can spend a considerable amount of time playing this game. Sometimes we keep score and sometimes we don't - mostly we don't. The girls can use the dictionary so that I'm not asked if a word exists! (Really, 'quet'?) And using a word in a sentence is from time to time a requirement! (Which is where, if you hang out with Kaitlin, Kylie, Breana, Brayton & I, "If you don't stop, I'll quirm you!" comes from!)

I try to challenge myself by finding the longest word possible - the girls go for the quick win.

The font on the cards are beautiful - very renaissancey. Sometimes I get that urge to frame them :)
